Clinton High student-athlete O’Kevius Conway has verbally committed to the University of South Carolina to play baseball. Now he has to finish his last two years of high school before going.
Conway commented, “I liked the school and campus and fell in love with it. My family likes it too. That was before I ever saw the field.” “I am very excited about O’Kevius' verbal commitment to South Carolina. It is obvious that the USC baseball program is tops in the nation, winning two consecutive national championships, and just missing a third by being the runner up,” an excited Clinton Head Coach Lee Atkinson commented. “New head coach Chad Holbrook must have seen something in O that he liked enough to try to get him to verbally commit, even though O’Kevius will only be a junior this fall.” Atkinson went on to say, “If you have seen O’Kevius play, you know he is a great player. What you may not know is that he has a great attitude, an incredible work ethic, and an unwillingness to be satisfied. He maintains that the team is more important than himself by encouraging his teammates to work harder. His maturity, drive and focus along with support from his mother Rachel and his father Anthony, have made him the player that he is. Another thing I want to add is that he knows that the dream of playing college baseball can only come true by being just as dedicated in the classroom by making the best grades possible so he can have this opportunity.” Atkinson shared that he saw this as a positive for the program and that with more scouts showing up more kids will get seen and may get to go on to further their education too. It will add to the enthusiasm that has started building with winning, making the playoffs, and getting more people to Clinton games. “As far as O is concerned, I don't believe that he will put his high school career on cruise control,” Atkinson assessed. “I believe that he will work even harder to be the best player and the best teammate he can be for the Clinton High Red Devils.” Conway said he had a real good summer playing baseball and thought he had done well in the recent week long tournament in Atlanta. He has been invited to the Palmetto Games which is by invitation only. He has also been invited to tryouts for the Under Armor All American team. When asked about his continuing to be a two sport athlete Conway commented, “Coach Holbrook told me to give it a hundred percent and enjoy myself. He told me he had played football too.” |
