On Wednesday night, the Clinton High School tennis team played their last regular season match at home against Chapman.
It was senior night and the Red Devils needed to win to secure the region championship.
First off the court was the number 2 doubles team, Van Nibert, a senior, and Joe Scarborough. They won with a score of 6-0, 6-2. Next off the court was Alec Powell at the number 2 singles position. He defeated Spencer Beron 6-0, 6-2.
Powell was followed by Jay Peay, the number 3 singles player. He won 6-1, 6-1 over Myron Garrett. Next off the court was David Barton, another senior, who plays number 4 singles. He defeated Colton Church 6-3, 6-0.
The number 1 singles player, Austin MacMillan also won his match against Eric Edwards. He won 6-1, 6-4. Then, at number 5 singles, Jacob Tiller won a good match 7-5 7-5 against Clay Smith. Finally, the number 1 doubles team of Powell and MacMillan won 6-1, 6-0. With that, the Devils swept Chapman 7-0.
With the win, the Red Devils finished the season with an overall record of 8-4 and a 7-1 record in region play.
The Red Devils won convincingly enough to break a tie with Blue Ridge and become the Region 3 AAA Champions.
The Red Devils will start playoffs next Thursday at home. |
