The Bell Street Red Wildcat teams traveled up to Hickory Tavern on Thursday night and came away with a sweep of the Panthers.

In the first game of the evening, Hickory Tavern enjoyed an 8-5 lead at the end of the first period but about midway through the second period they hit a dry spell and trailed the Wildcats 12-20 at the half. Bell Street’s Asia Cunningham scored nine of her game high 16 points in that period.

The third quarter was no better for the Panthers as they were not able to score in that quarter sealing their fate as Bell Street went on to take a 44-18 victory over the Panthers.

In addition to Cunningham’s 16 points, Chyna Davis added 12, Da’Nyshia Floyd and Brooke Baker each had six while MK Kelley and Cynthia McHam had two each for Bell Street. For Hickory Tavern, Mattie Cantrell had 12 points, Elizabeth Aylesworth - four and Danielle Crocker - two.

Coach Kevin Gaines commented after the game that the girls missed too many opportunities and too many free throws.

In boys’ action, Bell Street completed the sweep of Hickory Tavern by posting a 39-20 win. The teams played to a 5-5 tie at the end of the first period. In the second period Bell Street’s Ian Kinard took control of the offensive board and score nine of his game high 12 points to but the Wildcats up 16-11 at the half.

In the second half, the Panthers seemed unable to finish shots and make free throws. They also got themselves into foul trouble as three of their starting five had fouled out by mid-way through the final period. Both of these were also noted as concerns by Coach Gaines after the game.

For Bell Street in addition to Kinard’s 12, the next three high scorers were Tymori Tribble with seven and five each for Vee Thompson and Harrison Fisher. The top three Panther scorers were Chris Statom with nine and four each for Kobe Covington and KT Abney.

Both teams are scheduled to be back in action next Monday with Bell Street Red hosting Honea Path while Hickory Tavern will be hosting Bell Street White.
